Avocado

I usually find my objects from everyday contact with them. While walking on a trip, for example, or like this avocado I came across on a Berlin supermarket shelf and it spoke to me directly. I select all objects very carefully, according to criteria that I cannot even describe exactly. Philosophy, concept, intuition and gut have to be in line and just feel good to me. It was a long road that has now spanned almost three decades before I got where I am right now.

A lot of ideas are constantly running through my head. It is not always easy to channel everything well and then steer it in the right direction. During my time in Japan I was confronted with many trends and artists and learned a lot from them, which still influences my artistic work to this day.

So a few years ago I discovered that some of my works enter into a wonderful symbiosis in connection with special Japanese fabrics. In the work presented here, one of my fabrics was used as a background for each work. This resulted in a great mix of colors and objects. I have been loving the fabrics for years now. All of them come from Japan and are not infrequently more than 100 years old.

In Japan there is really a tradition of not throwing anything away, but of putting things into a new use. That is why it can also be that I receive fabrics that are 150 years old and were stored exactly as I received them. Or old kakichibui fabric that was previously used to transport sake. The fabric got a great patina through long use.
